Chilli - My Flavour of Together Story #FlavourStories

Food is such an evocative thing.  A smell or a flavour has the power to transport you back in your mind to the time and the place where you tried something for the first time.  It can conjure up memories of school days, Sundays spent at your grandparents' house, romantic meals for two or holidays abroad.

This year McCormick, the parent company of the herb and spice brand Schwartz is celebrating its 125th anniversary.  To celebrate, they are asking people to share their flavour stories in their Flavour of Together programme.  For everyone who shares their food story on the site or on their Facebook page, McCormick will donate $1 to charity (up to $1.25 million).  Why not add your story and join in with the campaign to help raise those valuable funds?

For me, the flavour that holds the most wonderful memories is that of Mexican Cuisine.  The potent heat of the chillies, the smoky taste of paprika and the freshness of coriander leaves work effortlessly together to create the taste of Mexico.

Fajitas, enchiladas, five bean chilli and burritos are regulars in my kitchen repertoire and enjoyed by all the family.  The food is fun, lively and delicious.

My favourite and most memorable flavour story involving the taste of Mexico took place back in 1992 when Ian are I first began officially dating.  We were still at the stage where we were trying to impress each other and not wanting to let our guard slip too much.  We were in a bit of a hurry going out one evening, so we picked up a takeaway Mexican Chilli pizza which we planned on eating in the car park before going into the pub to meet friends. Our impromptu picnic was quite romantic as we sat close together in Ian's Morris Oxford's bench seats with the cardboard pizza box balanced on our touching knees.  We picked up the triangles of pizza oozing with cheese and topped with peppers and chillies with a spicy sauce.  Now, I love spicy food, but one taste of that pizza and my mouth was on fire.  Was someone at the pizza parlour playing a prank?  Did the pizza inadvertently get an extra handful of chillies?  Did someone spill the whole pot on our pizza?  Or were these bad boys just right off the Scoville scale with their potency?  I'll never know.  But then in the back of my mind, I thought maybe I was being over sensitive.  I didn't want to look lame in front of my new, cool boyfriend or seem ungrateful that the pizza he bought me was causing my eyelids to sweat, so I ploughed on, trying to look like the slices of pizza were not tasting as hot as the pits of Hell.

After a few more bites, my tongue began to go alarmingly numb. It started to spread into my face and I seriously started to think that paralysis was setting in.  By this point, I had to say something.  Glancing sideways I could see Ian with a similar facial expression to the one that was clearly etched on my face.  Our bulging, red rimmed eyes met and we both broke out into a knowing smirk.  Simultaneously we lolled out our numbed, chilli paralysed tongues out and licked at the condensation that had formed on the car windows in a desperate attempt to quench the burning fire in our mouths. We then ran into the pub and downed two pints of ice cold beer!  We still laugh when we remember the chilli pizza incident and it definitely was a defining moment in our relationship.  I just wish that Smartphones existed then, because that footage would have gone viral!! I wonder if that is why chilli and Mexican food has such a fond place in our hearts and has become our go-to celebration dinner on anniversaries.  Chilli is definitely our Flavour of Together!

These days, we tend to enjoy a slighter milder form of Mexican cookery.  But our fajitas pay homage to that day in the car and to the start of our more open, more honest and less guarded relationship!  It's a quick and easy recipe resulting in the perfect food for a fun family meal. (Plus it won't result in you having to lick condensation from a car window in order to quench the fire burning on your tongue.)

Things To Do In Historic Cambridgeshire

The idea of moving house always remains at the back of my mind. Not that I'm unhappy with my house in our rural North Shropshire market town.  It's just the idea of a fresh start is always appealing and I love to look at houses on the internet and fantasize about living somewhere new! I enjoy browsing through photos of new houses with their shiny kitchens and bathrooms and imagine the potential within their walls. Also as the Easter holidays approach, we are looking for places in the UK to visit for days out or short breaks. Who knows, one such visit may be just the trigger I need to up sticks and make a new life for my family. Here is a guest post extolling the virtues of Peterborough with its booming economy, exciting regeneration and close proximity to the attractions of Cambridgeshire.  Handy for Cambridge University too, just in case one of my younger two turn out to be intellectual geniuses with a passion for rowing!

"Now that the sun is beginning to shine and the weather is becoming that little bit warmer, days spent exploring the great outdoors are a must for the entire family. If you live in Peterborough or are considering homes in Peterborough, you’ll be pleased to know that the picturesque area of Cambridge is just a short hop away.

Exploring the Cambridgeshire Fens

Surrounded by stunning scenery and with a total of four historic market towns to explore, Cambridgeshire and the Fenlands boast something to suit all. If you’re looking to clear the cobwebs away, then a trip to this picturesque part of the world is a must.

Historical and educational attractions

Combining both culture and history is a great way to entertain the little ones whilst also teaching them something new. Cambridgeshire is home to an abundance of historical and educational attractions, including that of Audley End House and Park, Houghton Mill, Ely Cathedral, the Roman Sandy, Mountfitchet Castle and Clare Castle Country Park.

Cambridgeshire

A breath of fresh air

At last the rain, hail and wind have decided to leave us for the winter, which only means one thing – family fun in the sun. Quite simply exploring Cambridgeshire’s attractive scenery is enough to keep the little ones entertained for hours, especially if you’re willing to take a picnic along.

Other historical attractions

The beautiful town of Cambridge is also home to one of the world’s most renowned Universities, which was established in 1209. A trip to this ancient University town will keep you entertained for hours on end, especially as there are a vast number of antiquities and treasures to explore.

Getting around

Getting around is easy, regardless of whether you choose to walk, jump in the car or use one of the many local transport services. Those that wish to travel further afield to the city of London can do so by jumping aboard one of the high speed trains, which will take you to the capital in less than an hour. The nearest airport is Stansted, which offers a variety of routes, including links to a number of European cities and attractions.

The best time to explore the cities sights and sounds

The Christmas and Easter holidays are a great time to explore this area as this is when many of the students return home, which means the streets appear less crowded with people."

Fans of Lalaloopsy are going to adore the new Lalaloopsy Babies range, featuring everyone's favourite characters as cute little babies!  The 30 cm tall dolls have soft bodies perfect for cuddling.  They have the trademark button eyes and a little open mouth ready for their bottles or dummies.

We were sent baby Crumbs Sugar Cookie to review.  With her yellow gingham nappy and pink hat she looks adorable and exactly how you'd imagine Crumbs would look as a baby .  The attention to detail is excellent.  From her embroidered belly button to the love heart patch bearing her date of birth (December 4th which is US National Cookie day!), Crumbs Sugar Cookie is an adorable doll.  She comes with a heart shaped dummy and a bottle shaped like Crumbs Sugar Cookie's pet Mouse.

lalaloopsy, dolls

Each baby has a bio to explain her personality.  Crumbs's sweet bio is:

Lalaloopsy

As with all Lalaloopsy dolls Crumbs came magically to life when her last stitch was sewn and takes her personality from the fabric used to make her, which was a baker's apron.  She really is "sew cute"!

Jewel Sparkles, Mittens Fluff 'n' Stuff and Pillow Featherbed are also available as Lalaloopsy Babies.  They are suitable for ages 4 and up and priced at around £19.99 from good toy retailers.

Bigjigs Seaside Slope

Our Bigjigs Play Patrol adventure is coming to an end, and we have one mission left.  Freddy was sent the Seaside Slope to play with to put the fun to the test!

The Bigjigs Seaside Slope is a beautifully made wooden structure featuring four angled ramps on which the colourful wooden fish roll down.  Starting at the top, they travel to the end of one ramp before dropping down onto the next and so on.  Passing the centre point they ring a little bell.  If you time it right you can have all fish rolling down the ramps at the same time.

Play Patrol

Freddy couldn't wait to try out the new toy as soon as he got home from school.  He loved the colour and the design of the toy. He instinctively knew what to do and soon had all four fish rolling and ringing the bell.   It is a lovely gender neutral toy with appeal to both boys and girls.

At four and a half years old he is a bit above the recommended age (36 mths +) and the Seaside Slope didn't keep him fully engaged once he'd mastered how it worked.  Unlike his trains or cars, the concept of rolling fish didn't lend itself to any role play or imaginative story telling from him.  I guess aquatic creatures just aren't his thing!

He was initially quite mesmerized by the friendly faced fishes rolling down the slopes. I could see him thinking about the timing of setting the fish go and he showed great dexterity as he positioned them on the slopes.  He was very interested in how it worked, watching the fish fall onto the next slope and travel down it in the opposite direction.  The science of the motion was clearly of interest to him.

I took note of some of the comments, questions and observations he made while playing:

The bell rings when the fish hit it.  I'm not sure why there is a bell in the sea though?

I love the blue colour.  Blue is my favourite colour.

The holes look like bubbles.

Why do the fish get stuck if two go together?

The fishes roll down the track. They roll and fall, roll and fall.

They go in the other direction when they get to the end.

I wish it was a car racer instead of fishes.

The whole fish spins around and not just the wheels.

I like it when they all go down together.

I want to show this to baby Ted because I think he'd like it. (Ted is his 15 mth old nephew.)

The build of the toy is excellent.  It is strong, stable and well made and perfectly designed for the job.  At 4 and a half, I think Freddy was just a little too old to be kept enthralled by this toy for very long.  However, I was impressed by his scientific reasoning as he worked out the Laws of Motion without even realising it! And he recognised the play value the Seaside Slope would have with a younger child, as he wants to show his nephew how it works.  I'm sure that if fully supervised, a little one would be mesmerised by the constant motion of the colourful fish. Then the toy would grow with the child giving it more longevity.

I do wonder that if it had been a toy with racing cars or construction vehicles whizzing down a sloped road, if it would have sparked more of an element of role play and he would have had the vehicles rushing to the rescue of some disaster to save the day. (Yes...I know he is very gender stereotypical when it comes to cars and trucks!)

For a slightly younger child, or one with an interest in fishes, this toy would tie in beautifully with a play session involving reading some themed books like The Rainbow Fish.  Or with a musical tie in with the song about the three little fishes who "swam all over the dam!" Fishy craft activities such as a collage made using shiny paper for scales would also be a lovely way to extend playtime and explore the theme further.

You can find the Seaside Slope on the Bigjigs website and it costs £29.99.  They also have a huge selection of  gorgeous wooden toys including their rail and road collections and other top quality toys.

We have loved every minute of being Play Patrol agents for Bigjigs.  The toys that Freddy has tested have all been beautifully made and he's enjoyed each and every one of them.  I love the fact that long after he has outgrown them, they will be handed on to the grandkids. We still have wooden toys that belonged to my eldest son from 25 years ago.  That's the beauty of buying such great quality toys...they last a lifetime and they are timeless classics that never go out of date.

Freddy enjoys helping out in the kitchen, whether he is baking cakes, washing up or decorating biscuits, if it's messy and fun...he is happy!  He has been busy helping make some no-cook chocolate and cereal cakes, using some Jordan's Country Crisp with Strawberries and some Asda Little Angels Organic Sultanas and Raisins that we were sent to try out.  It's such a quick and easy kid friendly recipe. Perfect for little ones to treat Mum on Mother's day with some yummy treats!

Jordans Cereal

To make 10 'chocolate crispy crackle cakes' you need:

150g milk chocolate (melted in microwave on Medium)
1-2 cups of cereal (we used Jordan's Country Crisp with Strawberry Cereal and Special K)
Raisins, sweeties and sprinkles to decorate.

Once the chocolate is melted, little ones can mix the cereals in independently and spoon the mix into ten cupcake cases in a tin.

kids baking

The mix can then be decorated with sprinkles, dried fruit or sweets before being put in the fridge to set.

ASDA organic raisins

Once they are set they are ready to eat!  The strawberry pieces add a delicious fruity flavour, which works well with the milk chocolate.  Decorating with raisins adds some dried fruit goodness into your child's diet (but Freddy loves to add Hundreds and Thousands too!)

We were sent the Little Angels Organic Raisins which cost 40p for a snack size pack, perfect for lunchboxes.  Also available are Raisins & Sultanas and Raisin & Apple, plus fruity Organic Oaty bars at £1.99 for 5 bars in apple, strawberry, banana and apricot flavours. They are yummy, organic and a healthier choice when it comes to snacking.

Do you know your Ash from your Elm?  Or your Sparrow from your Starling?  If the answer is no, then you are not alone.  According to a survey conducted by CBeebies show Tree Fu Tom many parents are stumped when their little ones ask them questions about nature.  When they see a flower in bloom or hear a bird singing in the tree, many parents are unable to identify what they are.

Help is at hand!  We can all brush up our knowledge ready to tell our children about the wonder and excitement of nature, as we explore the plants and wildlife in our parks, gardens or woodland.

We all associate Ocado with being a high quality online supermarket with home delivery on our grocery shopping. But did you know that they also sell toys including brands such as Playmobil, Mega Bloks and Sylvanian Families?  Plus at the moment, Ocado have a promotion running on their range of  Melissa & Doug toys with 20% off all purchases made until April 8th!

Melissa & Doug toys are beautifully made, well designed and with a traditional feel that both children and grown-ups will love. They are innovative, fun and educational.

We had a lovely Ocado delivery man bring us some of the Melissa & Doug toys to celebrate the 20% off promotion.  We received a Scoop and Stack Ice Cream Cone Playset, a Habitats Reusable Sticker Pad and a Dinosaur Stamp Set.

Melissa and Doug

The Melissa & Doug Scoop and Stack Ice Cream Cone Playset consists of two wooden cones and a selection of different coloured ice cream scoops with a magnetic scooper.  Little ones will love indulging in some Ice Cream Parlour role play serving up cololurful ice cream combinations.  This is brilliant for their social interaction and also helps develop their fine motor skills.  It is also a great toy to introduce patterns and sequencing as little ones try to make your orders. After they have finished playing, everything packs away into the sturdy, plastic ice cream tub, which is a great idea when it comes to tidying up.  This toy is usually £18.99 but is on offer at £15.19.

Melissa and Doug

The Melissa & Doug Dinosaur Stamp Set is a great activity allowing little dinosaur fans to create pre-historic scenes using the ink pad and eight stampers.  The set also includes coloured pencils, with everything stored in a lovely wooden box with a cool dinosaur design on the side.  Freddy loved the mix of dinosaurs which includes the T-Rex, Stegosaurus and Triceratops and the volcano stamp adds some background to children's designs.  Usually £8.47, with the 20% discount you can buy it for just £6.77.

Melissa and Doug

I love the Habitats themed Melissa & Doug Reusable Sticker Pad!  It comes with five scenes and 150 stickers featuring animals from the farm, prehistoric times, the jungle, the desert and the ocean.  The strong vinyl stickers can be repositioned again and again onto the glossy, full colour backgrounds.   It is an educational activity helping children to learn about different animals and their habitats, but if little ones want to have fun by putting a Diplodocus next to a cow on the farm, then they can!  Anything goes when a child's imagination is put into action.  On sale at just £3.99 this is a bargain that will keep the kids entertained for hours!

With Easter coming up, why not buy a Melissa & Doug toy from Ocado as a gift for someone special?  It will last a lot longer than a chocolate egg!

Whether you are looking for some great value gifts for Mother's Day or if the kids are looking at buying something for mum with their pocket money, make sure you check out Poundland.  This year they have a great range of gifts all priced at their super value £1 price tag.  We were sent some to take a look at, ahead of the big day, which this year falls on March 30th.

poundland

Everything you need from gift wrap, gift bags and presents are available to buy in store for £1 each.  I particularly liked the 'World's Best Mum' wine glass, which would go brilliantly well with a bottle of mum's favourite wine. If your mum prefers a nice cup of tea to wine, then there is a boxed floral gift mug that could be given along with some homemade cards stating 'I promise to make the bearer of this token a cup of tea!'. There is a really cute glass photo frame which would look lovely if you popped in a photo of yourself with your mum. The porcelain tea light holder has holes in it to shine out the word 'mum' in candlelight.  Perfect for a scented tealight.

I love how the Poundland gift ranges make it so easy to buy gifts for Mother's Day. Paying just £1 for a gift means no one has to overspend or blow their budget in order to treat their mum. I like to add a couple of Poundland gifts to go alongside the other things I buy, so my mum gets lets of goodies to open on the day. The quality of the gifts is all very good and the large gift bag is very sturdy and just right for popping in your pressies for mum.  Other gifts available include oven gloves, tea towels, notebooks, teddies and charm keyrings.  There is also a special Mother's Day cupcake set which includes cases and picks, so you could treat your mum to some home made cupcakes especially for her!

Egg and chips is one of life's guilty pleasures, that is sometimes exactly what you need to satisfy a comfort food craving.  A perfect British classic, reminiscent of childhood teatimes spent dunking your chips into the runny yolk!  This year, Hotel Chocolat have recreated this childhood favourite, making the perfect Easter gift for anyone who shares my love of egg and chips.  They sent me one to try, which came in one of their Hotel Chocolat classy, stylish, black ribboned gift bags!

The sunnyside up egg has a gorgeous yellow yolk filled with runny salted caramel and the egg white is made from creamy white chocolate speckled with vanilla seeds.  The eight chips are made from mellow milk chocolate filled with salted caramel. Beautifully presented, this is an ideal alternative to a traditional Easter Egg.  It is cute and quirky, with a real sense of fun.  Definitely one of the more original gift ideas that I've seen this year, and knowing that it is from Hotel Chocolat guarantees that it is top quality.

I love the attractive presentation of the Egg and Chips and the sturdy packaging makes this a good choice if you are sending someone an Easter gift this year.  It's a lot less fragile and more compact than a hollow egg.  It's a lovely take on a classic teatime treat, that will definitely delight anyone lucky enough to receive it!

You can buy the Hotel Chocolat Egg and Chips instore or online priced at £14.00.

Getting to Grips with a Rope Swing

With a little bit of sunshine managing to breakthrough at the weekend, Freddy took full advantage of the garden.  Dressed in his LEGO Movie onesie and his customised Skribbies hi-tops, my little man decided to master the art of the rope swing.  The girls, when they were younger, never really managed to do much more than hang off it clinging on for dear life with both hands, but Freddy had bigger plans.  Climbing up the ladder to the platform of his slide and swing set, carrying the rope with him, he launched himself off the edge with the rope wrapped around his waist.  Like a miniature Tarzan he flew through the air, coming perilously close to the frame of the play equipment he had jumped off, but undeterred by the dangers of his new game.  He has continued to experiment with his rope swing and it has become his garden toy of choice.  Sometimes he lands in a heap but springs up declaring "I'm OK!" before brushing himself down and doing it all over again.

It is so wonderful to see Freddy back to his old self, healthy, happy and full of energy enjoying the garden and the great outdoors.  After so many weekends being written off due to ill health, I am looking forward to making the most of the improving weather and enjoying some family fun!

Tips for Holidaying With Little Ones

$
0
0
With five children aged between four and twenty five, over the years I have had lots of family holiday experiences and I am no stranger to travelling with children.  We've travelled as far afield as Los Angeles, been to several European destinations and enjoyed many UK breaks too.  When travelling with children, you have to be better prepared and ready for more eventualities than when you travel alone or as a couple. Remembering to pack a favourite toy or a favourite juice bottle can make all the difference between having a happy or a grumpy toddler.  Having something familiar can help them make the transition to being somewhere unfamiliar.  If you have a fussy eater, popping some of their favourite cereal bars or healthy snacks in their suitcase can be really helpful and you'll be reassured that they will be eating something whilst away from home.  Here are some of my top tips for having a happy holiday with little ones!

1:  Pack each child a small bag containing colouring pencils, comics, stickers, a book, little toys and a few food treats. Whether you are hanging around an airport or stopping at services, kids get fed up.  You could end up spending a fortune on bored kids in an attempt to placate them, especially when surrounded by overpriced gift shops in a railway station or ferry terminal.  Making each child responsible for their own exciting holiday bag of goodies will keep them occupied and make travelling that much easier!  My kids always love having their own bag to go away with.  It makes them feel grown up and they are useful to use whilst they are away to.

holiday tips

2:  Don't forget the sunscreen! Wherever and whenever you are travelling, make sure you pack sun cream. Children's delicate skin can easily be damaged due to exposure to the sun.  It doesn't have to be a hot and sunny day either, and if you are spending more time than usual outside, it is better to be safe and protect your children from the dangers of UV rays.  I'll never forget my poor little Joe burning the tops of his legs on a day that was overcast.  It was this that made me realise the importance of protecting their skin.

holiday tips

3: Be flexible. Holidays are not the time or place to stick to routines.  You can get very stressed trying to keep to bedtimes and mealtimes, meaning you won't enjoy yourself as much.  When we went to Tenerife with my son Joe aged 18 months, we hired a buggy and took him out in the evenings with us. He'd snooze in the pushchair safely by our table, allowing us to enjoy a meal out.  Then we'd pop him staright to bed in the hotel when we got back. Kids are really adaptable and will soon fall back into the routine of home once you get back to reality!

holiday tips

4:  Learn some handy phrases in the language of the country you are visiting. Not only is it polite to have a try at speaking to people in their native tongue, it is also a great way to teach your children a few words of a new language.  Plus if you get caught short in the middle of nowhere and need directions to the nearest town, you will be able to seek help much easier.  We got lost on our way to our French holiday home in the heart of rural France and had to ask directions from a Frenchman in the street.  We were so glad that we had polished up our Francais!  When Freddy was three we taught him to say 'Bonjour' and 'Merci' and he was a hit with all the French women in the local shop who were really impressed with him for making the effort.

holiday tips

5: Keep a scrapbook. Every year that we go on holiday we buy a scrapbook and pack some pens and felt tips and a Pritt Stick so we can keep a family holiday diary.  Everyone joins in, drawing pictures, sticking in tickets, leaflets or photos, writing diary entries or sketching a cartoon, so we have everybody's thoughts and stories preserved within the pages.  We have done scrapbooks for all our holidays and they are lovely to look back on.  It's lovely to see some of the contributions from the kids as toddlers.  On a city break to London when Kizzy was just 2, she stuck in leaves that she had collected from the street, which she called 'flowers'.  It's a wonderful memory.  For our Disneyland Paris scrapbook the children wrote down little things that Freddy said so we never forget them.  They also stuck in the park map, tickets, receipts and made cartoons and stories out of the things we did together making wonderful memories to last forever.  It also gave the children something to do in any spare moments they had, plus it is an educational activity for when they are away from school.  Their grandparents loved being able to see what the children had been up to once we arrived back home!

6: Take a spare memory card. You can never take enough pictures on holiday.  I literally take thousands and don't regret taking any of them!  Nothing is worse than running out of space on your memory card, so to be on the safe side we always pop a spare card into the camera case ready to use if necessary.  After all, who would want to miss photographing moments like this, when my little Ella met one of Cinderella's mice?!

Disneyland

7:  Do some research before you go!  Although we never stick to a strict itinerary when on holiday, I do like to know what attractions are nearby and have some wet weather contingency plans up our sleeves in case the weather takes a turn for the worse. You can also involve the kids in making plans and get them interested about places they will be able to visit.  It is nice to put some of the decisions in the hands of the children, it is their holiday too and they will enjoy it all the more if they have had a say in some of the things on the to-do list.  We have visited zoos, castles, theme parks and indoor play areas thanks to the kids planning with us!

January heralds the start of the new year and is usually the time for us to buy calendars, but that is no longer the only window of opportunity that we have to get ourselves a nice new calendar to hang on the wall.  With companies such as Vistaprint, we are able to create beautiful bespoke calendars, which can begin at any month of the year!

Vistaprint gave me the opportunity to make my own wall calendar, with months going from April 2014 through to the end of March 2015.   Starting calendars on different months is a great idea if you moving house and want a new calendar to display or if you decorate and want one to match the new colour scheme. Having them start on a particular month to coincide with a birthday makes a great gift idea - and one that will last for a whole year. Or make one to run along the school year from September or the financial year from April.  It would be a lovely present for someone off to university in September to make a calendar starting from then filled with photos of family and home to hang in their uni lodgings.

The website offers hundreds of different design choices with the option to include your own photographs. For children there are some fun Nickelodeon templates, while other designs include block colours, geometric patterns, floral print, landscapes, cartoons and nature.  With themes that would suit various industries to backgrounds that are perfect for families, there is a design for all tastes.

Once you have chosen a design you can personalise the calendar by uploading favourite photos which can be added to each page using a chosen layout featuring up to six images per page.  Events can be added to the date grid to remind you of special occasions.  Text can also be added to make a title and captions.

You get to preview the calendar before you order it and a pop up box alerts you to anything you may have missed.

Prices currently start at £6.66 for a single calendar order (which excludes VAT and postage) a saving of 50% off the regular price. Glossy paper comes as standard on the calendar but you can currently upgrade to a premium, thicker paper for just £1.24.  At the checkout, Vistaprint show images of other products you might like using the photos you used, but you can easily skip these offers and head straight for your cart.

Bracelet Making Craft Sets - MyStyle Craft Super Loop Bands and 4M Cool Colour Wristlets

MyStyle Craft Design & Make Super Loop Bands

Elastic band bracelets are all the rage at Kizzy's primary school.  So much so that the children have been banned from wearing them!  But that does not deter the girls who sit and weave their own rubber band bracelets at lunchtime and wear them hidden up the sleeves of their school sweatshirts.

rubber band bracelets

Needless to say, Kizzy was very excited to test out this craft set which contains enough silicone bands and S-Loops to make five colourful bracelets.  The bands came in a variety of colours and are really thick and strong so there was no breakage.

The process is very easy.  You thread a band through lengthways, line up to two end loops and thread the next band through those loops and so on.  The fully illustrated instruction booklet takes you through what to do step by step. The bracelets take shape very quickly, with an attractive pattern forming and the end result is really good and very wearable.  Kizzy was able to work independently and enjoyed making the bracelets.  You can dismantle the bracelets and re-use the bands if necessary.

Overall, we were really impressed by this set for it's simplicity, the strength and quality of the bands and the really nice end result.

Priced at £9.99 this is a well priced craft set that children will really enjoy.  A lovely activity for the kids to do independently to make bracelets for sharing and wearing.

4M Cool Colour Wristlets

This set makes four brightly coloured wristlets which incorporate a chain, a proper clasp and a charm.  It contains everything needed except for scissors, a ruler and sticky tape.

4M, craft, girls

As you may expect with a more involved piece of jewellery, the process is a bit more complicated.  It involves attaching a length of the plastic thread to the chain and  making a loop secured with tape.  The remainder of the plastic thread is then knotted onto this loop, which was a bit fiddly.  In fact we had to get Dad in to help because the instructions were a bit too complicated for me and Kizzy!  Ian's years as a boy scout, learning to tie knots, definitely came in handy and he was able to help make the bracelet.  Once the thread was tied off, a metal ring, charm and clasp had to be attached to the end of the chain.  It's not easy opening a metal ring and then closing it securely using just your fingers, so again Dad came to the rescue.

Great gismos

The end result looked quite good but the knotted section was quite rigid (maybe Ian's man fingers tied the knots too tightly) but I'm sure it will give over time.  Once on the wrist it looked quite professional looking with the clasp and charm, and the intricately knotted section looked impressive.

Great Gismos, 4M

Overall, we liked the finished wristlet but found the process a bit tricky.  Some adult help was definitely required.  At £9.95 this set makes four of the bracelets which is good value.  I'm sure with practice the technique would become easier and the end result even better.

Both of these craft sets would make a great gift idea for girls aged 8 and over.

Countdown to Easter with Playmobil

We are all familiar with advent calendars counting down to Christmas Day, but now we can countdown to Easter too with this brilliant Easter Calendar from Playmobil!  There are 10 doors to open, each containing an Easter themed Playmobil item that together will create a cute Easter bunny scene on Easter Sunday.

Playmobil

Featuring three Easter Bunny figures along with Easter eggs and other accessories, this is a lovely gift for a child in the run up to Easter, that can be kept and played with for years to come.  It is perfect for some imaginative role play games where the bunnies are painting and hiding eggs for the big day. It would make a great alternative to a chocolate egg for children aged 4 and up and would be ideal to send through the post, being much less fragile!

I love the big, chunky, colourful box with the ten big, numbered doors pre-filled with Playmobil goodies. Freddy loved opening the Playmobil pirate advent calendar in the run up to Christmas, excitedly opening it each day to find what toy was hiding inside.  He is going to adore this Easter calendar and the toys will make a great display on our windowsill over Easter.

Easter calendar

Playmobil toys are so well made with perfect attention to detail, and this set will be a welcome addition to Freddy's collection. (Bunnies aren't just for Easter after all...just look at Harvey, Hop or that bunny from Donnie Darko!!!)

Countdown calendars can help with children's number recognition and help build up the excitement to special occasions.  They also work well in conjunction with a reward scheme, as the promise of opening a new door on the calendar can be just the trick for getting a little one to get dressed, clean their teeth, eat breakfast or tidy their toys.  At exciting times of the year when routines get disrupted, this can prove very useful indeed!

The Easter Calendar is available at Playmobil.co.uk alongside a whole range of other brilliant Playmobil toys. It is reasonably priced at just £9.99 which I think is excellent value...or should I say eggscellent value?!

Making Home Improvements a Family Affair

DIY is usually a lot of hard work!  When you have children who are eager to 'help', the simplest tasks can become an even bigger chore as you try to paint the walls and supervise your toddler while he sticks his fingers in the can of emulsion.  If you have some jobs that need doing around the house, there are ways that you can involve the whole family without it becoming a DIY disaster.  Delegating tasks to each member of the household will make everyone feel important and hopefully make it easier to get on with the job in hand. Plus, the kids can learn valuable skills that they can develop in later life.

Make wooden planters

If you are improving the garden, displaying wooden boxes filled with plants is a great way to add colour to even the smallest outdoor space, plus it's a good way to teach the little ones about gardening. Making the wooden planters yourself is something best done when the kids are not around as it will involve cutting wood using a jigsaw.  But once the boxes have been put together, sanded and primed, you can then allow your little co-workers to help you choose a paint colour and design. Maybe even let them decorate their own planter while you paint yours.

Take a family trip to your local garden centre and allow each family member to pick their own plant for the garden. Giving children the responsibility of looking after their plant, will teach them the importance of nurturing and caring for it.  Getting into the habit of watering the plants makes little ones very useful in the summertime!

Create a feature wall

Whether it’s in the kids' room, the living room, the playroom or in the kitchen, a feature wall is a great asset to the home, which totals revamps the living space. Whether you opt simply to add a lick of paint or apply a funky wallpaper design, there are various options to choose from. You can let the little ones accompany you when it comes to choosing the paint colours and wallpaper styles. If you need to strip a wall, little ones will love to help peel the old paper off.  Once they get bored you can get out the steamer and finish the job in no time.

Special paints can transform a wall into a blackboard or make it magnetic - perfect for the playroom!  There are lots of wall stickers available that will transform a wall in just minutes.  Let little ones help with the decision making so they feel involved.

Stencils are also a great idea, and younger children can have a go – just ensure you tape newspaper over any areas you wish to protect.

decorating

Sometimes you need to get in the professionals for any big jobs that need doing. You may need to repair your sash windows, install double glazing, plaster the ceiling or put in a gas fire.  Little ones can be curious but it is important to keep them away from the work in progress.  Ensuring they are entertained whilst this work is going on is a must.  But they still want to feel like they are helping.

Get creative

Why not get them to create their own artwork using brightly coloured materials such as fabric, tissue paper, glitter and paint.  It will certainly ensure they’re entertained. You can then frame their artwork and hang it on one of the walls in the household. This will make them feel like they’ve really helped with the home improvements.

Today, Tinyme are launching a Kickstarter campaign to get an exciting new product onto the market. Name Blocks are wooden puzzles made using the letters of a child's name.  Each one is completely customisable using a choice of font, colour, pattern and design and can feature any name up to 9 letters long using between 4 and 9 blocks.  They come in a felt storage pouch and include two slide-in name cards to enhance the educational play value, allowing children to learn to spell their own names, first matching the colour coded letters before moving on to letter matching alone.

200 Super Early Bird Backers are being given the chance to get their hands on the first Tinyme Name Blocks with a generous 25% discount.  Once they are all gone, the next 400 backers can buy at a 15% discount.  After that, backers will receive a 10% discount. If you don't want to buy the Name Blocks but still want to help launch this new product you can pledge some cash to the campaign and will receive a printable board game or ebook as a token of Tinyme's thanks.

I'm featuring this information on my blog as a favour to Tinyme who I have worked with before, and as a heads up to anyone wanting to grab a bargain and help launch this new product onto the market! Tinyme have made me this customised image with Freddy's name on to showcase the product. I think it looks like it's going to be a pretty cool new addition to the Tinyme range.
